Who Are We
Mick has travelled the world for over ten years as a tour driver and has undertaken numerous motorbike rides including a circumnavigation of New Zealand on a 175 Serow. Mick followed the original, (or what is left of it), Route 66 before riding north to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, then riding south to Mexico City on a Honda Dominator. Mick also organized and rode a charity ride from London across the Stan’s to Vladivostok on a Honda Transalp as part of a fundraising event for F.A.N, he once again returned to Russia to lead the first ever commercial ride of the Road of Bones as part of the 105 day Road of Bones Expedition from London to Magadan. Mick hopes to share his two great loves of travel and motorbikes with other like-minded people.
A boy from the bush, one time Park Ranger and fire fighter, Brendan left the comforts of his native home for the lure of exotic locations. Having traveled extensively on his own throughout various parts of the world, Brendan has also worked for 6 years for tour companies in Ireland, Africa and South America. Brendan can be found leading our tours in Patagonia or the epic Road of Bones expedition. Riding motorcycles since the age of 14, Brendan is an avid biking enthusiast.
After growing up in Brisbane and obtaining degrees in Arts and Law, Ryan decided that he was more attached to his faded purple backpack and the open road than a black briefcase and the inside of a court room. After travelling independently for a number of years he began working for a European based tour company leading clients through Continental Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and the Middle East. Ryan subsequently returned to the office job and quickly realized that people were much happier meeting a tour guide than a lawyer. This quest to be liked led to a return to tour leading in South America, where the joys of Carnival in Rio, the Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu, the beauty of Patagonia and the food in Argentina convinced him that an office job was a very poor second to the life he was living. Ryan worked with Mick in South America for two years before they decided that working for themselves would be more satisfying than working for the man. Ryan relishes the opportunity to show this amazing part of the world to Compass Expedition passengers.
Jerry “Truman” Cook
Jerry is from Perth, Western Australia and after completing a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a course in Travel and Tourism, Jerry embarked on his life long dream of visiting South America. After learning Spanish and travelling independently for a couple of years, Jerry decided he wanted to stay on, working the next 4 years as a tour leader, guiding tours all over South and Central America, Cuba and Mexico. Jerry’s first tour as a guide in South America was from Peru to Brazil in 2003 working for an overland company. Mick was the driver on this tour. Little did he know years later they would come together to co-found Compass Expeditions, where they could combine their love of motorbikes and travel.
Originally for Uruguay, Veronica has lived and worked in Australia since 1974. She has a Masters of Social Research from Monash University and after many years working as a Social Researcher in both the not-for-profit and Government sectors turned her hand to event management. In 2008 she successfully managed the organization of the International World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education (WIPCE); held at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne with over 3,000 delegates from around the globe. In 2009 Veronica joined the Compass Expeditions team and is instrumental in managing our administrative systems, booking processes and general day-to-day office procedures. When Compass Expeditions was initially formed the owners knew one thing; how to run great tours, the rest we didn’t have a clue about. It has been Veronica who has developed the booking systems, accounting systems and legal business requirements, without her Compass Expeditions would not be where it is today.
Jack left his job in the Australian army to travel the world after a chance meeting with a retired overland tour leader. Tours up the coast of Western Australia quickly turned into trans Africa expeditions. Many years and countries later another chance meeting happened in Paraguay with Mick who was about to set off on his first Russian adventure. Years later after a midlife crisis which involved buying a house in England Jack returned to his love of travel. A couple of tours to West Africa and a London to New York on a Dakar lead to the opportunity to become the Compass Expeditions UK rep.
