Notes from the Saddle – Australia Encompassed 2013 – Darwin to Kakadu

Our 2013 Australia Encompassed tour is underway and this trip that runs from Darwin to Melbourne passes through some of the most spectacular terrain on the planet. This year the group is full of characters and the trip has benefitted from some good weather so far…below we have the first instalment of what is happening on the road to Melbourne…..

After 4 days in the top end capital of Darwin Mick, Jerry and 10 clients have just left Darwin bound for Melbourne on the 19 day Australia Encompassed tour. Joining us for the ride are clients from the US, South Africa, Zimbabwe, UK and of course Australia. Many are on Compass Expeditions BMWs that include  Sertao, F 650, F800 & R1200 GS bikes while some clients have opted to bring their own that include a Ducati Monster 696, a Super Tenere and a R 1200 GSA.
First stop was the mighty Adelaide River where we enjoyed a river cruise with a difference! We watched in amazement as massive crocodiles leapt out of the water to snatch chickens or lumps of meat dangled from the boat. The Adelaide River is famous for its “jumping Crocodiles” and for most it was the first time they had seen these prehistoric giants us close and personal.
The group is now at the international renown Kakadu National Park a 20,000 square kilometre region of incredible bio-diversity, stunning scenery and amazing wildlife, a early morning cruise on the famous Yellow Waters was a highlight of the day. The group also enjoyed a ride out to the indigenous rock art sites of Nourlangie and Ubir, both sites are home to some of the oldest rock art on earth and offer an amazing insight into the culture and history of the local aborigines.
Kakadu is one of those places that must be visited once in everyones lifetime, its that good.
