Motorcycle Rental FAQs

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions

Can I take the bike off road?

Yes we have fitted the bikes for off road travel with dual purpose tyres and protective equipment. Almost any public road in Australia may be ridden except for a few exceptions, see our Terms & Conditions for what roads are prohibited. For clients wishing to ride into the outback we can provide, for a one off rental fee, an “Outback Kit”.

Where can I drop the bike?

Compass Expeditions has drop points all over Australia, if your drop city isn’t listed on the rental home page simply contact us and we shall give you a price for the town / city you wish to leave the bike

Where can I collect the bike?

We can either deliver the bike to your hotel, free of charge, within the Melbourne CBD or you can collect from our depot at 117 Inglis St, Ballan, Victoria. Ballan is a 40 minute train ride from Melbourne.

What are your opening hours?

Remember we are down-under so we are ahead in time of most other countries, email is the best way to contact us from overseas however we are available at our depot from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and can arrange collection / drop-off outside these times. Our phone number 1300 887 327 is available 24/7 for the cost of a local from anywhere in Australia

How do I get to Melton?

Easy, Melton is an ideal starting point away from the mayhem of the big city of Melbourne. It is only a 40 minute, *($7.20 off peak or $10.30 peak), train ride from the city. See the train timetable at this link below.

How do I get from the Airport, Tullamarine, to the city?

Again easy, it is a *$17 bus ride with Airport Sky Bus that departs every 10 minutes from the airport and stops at the Southern Cross railway station in down-town Melbourne, where you can catch the train to Melton. We do recommend a night in Melbourne especially if you have flown internationally.

Can I leave excess luggage at you depot?

Yes, we can provide free storage for your luggage and can provide shipping of your luggage to your final destination if renting one way. This shipping will be at your own cost.

What is the insurance excess?

This is the amount that we can charge in the event of damage to the bike. This amount is set at between AUD$ 4000-$5000, depending on the model of motorcycle you rent. On rentals over 7 days, this amount can be reduced for an AUD$18 per day payment for the entire rental period.

What is the security bond?

This is an amount taken via way of a credit card payment that is returned in full at the end of the rental when the bike has been returned undamaged.

What license do I need?

You will need a full drivers license and be at least 21 years old to rent our 650s and 25 to rent our 1200s. The license must be in English, if not you will need an International Drivers Permit (IDP).

What happens if I breakdown?

You must first ring our 24/7 phone line on 1300 887 327, (local call fee from anywhere in Australia). All our BMWs are covered by a 24 hour Roadside Assist program, simply ring a number and you and the bike will be rescued. In the case or Kawasaki and Suzuki rentals, Compass Expeditions will take all reasonable steps to affect mechanical repairs ASAP. Please read more on riding in the outback and our Terms & Conditions.

Will my mobile phone work in Australia?

The mobile phone coverage in Australia is hopeless. The major capitals have coverage as do the major inland towns; anywhere else is virtually non-existent, although the Eastern Seaboard does have quite decent coverage. We recommend that you have SKYPE downloaded on your I-phone and you will have decent coverage wherever there is WIFI internet. If you wish to bring you mobile phone ensure it is unlocked and has international roaming. We can provide you with SIM cards for your phone at a set cost depending on the minute value of the card you would like. Compass Expeditions can also rent a satellite phone.

Compass Expeditions can offer advice on the best riding routes and itineraries. We are here to make your motorcycle rental experience as stress free and enjoyable as possible. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us
