COMPASS EXPEDITIONS: INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Compass Expedition. Here you can find out about us and our fantastic crew. We, the owners of Compass Expeditions, have accumulated over twenty years experience in leading motorcycle tours in South America alone, with many more years working in various other continents. Our philosophy is simply "it's not a race", it's a chance to mix the great pleasure of motorcycling with some of the most wonderful, stunning, varied destinations on earth.
COMPASS EXPEDITIONS: THE COMPANY
Compass Expeditions was formed off the back of a fundraising motorcycle ride from London to Vladivostok in 2005. A charity was formed; Freidreichs Ataxia Network, (F.A.N.) and we at Compass donate part of every booking we take, to F.A.N, providing hands on support to the sufferers of Freidreichs. See our Responsible tourism page for more of what we do and where.
We remain a small company with hand picked ride leaders and support vehicle drivers. Our passion is motorbikes and travel and we remain committed to not only riding, but experiencing something other than the road we ride upon.
COMPASS EXPEDITIONS: OTHER STUFF
Something that is rarely asked for and therefore rarely considered by most other tour operators is whether your money is protected in the event of financial failure. When you book with Compass Expeditions the answer is yes your money is protected by the TRAVEL COMPENSATION FUND of AUSTRALIA, through our partnership with Latitude travel.

Mick McDonald

Mick has travelled the world for over ten years as a tour driver and has undertaken numerous motorbike rides including a circumnavigation of New Zealand on a 175 Serow. Mick followed the original (or what is left of it) Route 66 before riding north to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, then riding south to Mexico City on a Honda Dominator. He also helped organise a charity ride from London across the Stans to Vladivostok on a Honda Transalp. One of the hardest rides Mick undertook was in his mother country of Australia; Cape York Peninsula again on a Honda Dominator. Mick hopes to share his two great loves of travel and motorbikes with other like-minded people.

Brendan Barbetti
A boy from the bush, one time Park Ranger and fire fighter, Brendan left the comforts of his native home for the lure of exotic locations. Having travelled extensively on his own throughout various parts of the world, Brendan has also worked for 6 years for tour companies in Ireland, Africa and South America. Riding motorcycles since the age of 14, Brendan is an avid biking enthusiast.
Ryan Heath
After growing up in Brisbane and obtaining degrees in Arts and Law, Ryan decided that he was more attached to his faded purple backpack and the open road than a black briefcase and the inside of a court room. After travelling independently for a number of years he began working for a European based tour company leading clients through Continental Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and the Middle East. Ryan subsequently returned to the office job and quickly realized that people were much happier meeting a tour guide than a lawyer. This quest to be liked led to a return to tour leading in South America, where the joys of Carnival in Rio, the Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu, the beauty of Patagonia and the food in Argentina convinced him that an office job was a very poor second to the life he was living. Ryan worked with Mick in South America for two years before they decided that working for themselves would be more satisfying than working for the man. Ryan relishes the opportunity to show this amazing part of the world to Compass Expedition passengers.
Jerry "Truman" Cook
Jerry is from Perth, Western Australia and after completing a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a course in Travel and Tourism, Jerry embarked on his life long dream of visiting South America. After learning Spanish and traveling independently for a couple of years, Jerry decided he wanted to stay on, working the next 4 years as a tour leader, guiding tours all over South and Central America, Cuba and Mexico. Jerry’s first tour as a guide in South America was from Peru to Brazil in 2003 working for an overland company. Mick was the driver on this tour. Little did he know years later they would partner up in Compass Expeditions, where they could combine their love of motorbikes and travel.
Leo Schultze
Leo is from the capital of carnival in Germany, Cologne. Leo has worked for many years in various skilled trades but longed for adventure so set his sights on his first major expedition, Alaska to Ushuaia, along the way working in many capacities to extend his adventure. Crossing paths in Buenos Aires with Compass Expeditions Leo has come on board to become a very valuable team member. Alongside mechanical and expeditions skills he also speaks three languages. German, English and Spanish. His enthusiastic demeanour ensures he is very well regarded by our clients.
Together as Compass Expeditions we hope to combine our experience, knowledge, expertise and passion to take you on the most rewarding travel experience of your life.
